if you will ask yourself this question when you are working with your dog.
Example: your dog sees you then runs over and jumps up to greet you. Most people will hold the dog down so all four feet are on the ground. Settle down or calm down is given in a soft tone.
Clients thinks: When I hold him down he is learning to stay down while I pet him...
Dog Thinks : Wow I like this if I want to be held and petted then I must first jump.

If your dog is barking in his create try to use a water bottle tuned to spray a stream. Then when your dog barks in the crate use the water bottle to spray him in the forehead and say no barking.... More dog training tips at http://www.betterdog.com

Several week ago I was asked to head a program that trains inmates in a state penatintury to train dogs. The program is used to save dogs that are considered unadoptable.
Why dogs in prison? The last thing I think off when thinking of a prison is love and nuturing people. I also would not think of inmates as having the patiants required to teach and care for dogs. I have been training dogs for 25 years and I can tell you I have seen it all when it comes to people and there dogs. So when I started the inmate training program I was not exspecting to be suprised.
I was very pleasantly suprised by my experience with this program. During the first day at the facilaty I went to a steel guard gate and pushed a button. Inside I could see the guards getting ready for me to enter this very secure room. Once inside the room I was search with a metal detector and asked to present my Id and visitors card. After about ten minutes of phone calls and verifying I was me I was told to enter the prison.
Once inside the prison I had to walk about 100 yards to the secure guard and administration building. Once Inside I was taken to the yard were the dogs and the prisoners were waiting.
Once the training started we were on our own...the prisoner, dogs and I. I was suprised to see that the yard was very clean and well kept. Our kennels are inside of a seperate fence area with in the main prison yard. Most of our training is done around the prison. Having dogs in training while the other prisoners are continuing their activities is a challenge.
