Coney Island's Luna Park Officially Opens for Memorial Weekend 2010

Historic Coney Island rises from the ashes. The famed amusement park, Luna Park, reopening Saturday, May 29, 2010, just in time for Memorial Weekend, on the former site of Astroland. It has been over 60 years since the original park was destroyed in a fire.

We'll have to wait and see how well/or not this park does.  I was expecting to find long lines and long waits to get in and to get on the rides and I was surprised at how few people actually showed up for the grand opening.  As you can see from my pictures, it really was not very crowded at all.

The park features 19 new rides, including roller coasters, a human slingshot, go-carts, and the world debut of "Air Race" - where riders soar and barrel roll around a control tower.

Beach season also officially opens in Coney Island and across New York City Saturday, May 29th.

There's no entrance fee, so whether you prefer games or rides, feel free to take a stroll down the Boardwalk and enjoy the sights, sunshine and of course a New York hotdog from the original Nathan's World Famous Hot Dogs.
