Neglected dogs found eating dead pack-mates at man's home, officials say
Animal cruelty officers found neglected dogs eating their decomposing pack-mates when serving a search warrant on Tuesday for an animal abuse complaint in Maiden, say Catawba County Animal Services officials.

Caldwell dog disease ID'd as distemper
(By Steve Lyttle, slyttle@charlotteobserver.com) Caldwell County officials said Tuesday afternoon that canine distemper is the cause of the illness that has resulted in more than two dozen dogs being euthanized at the animal control shelter during the past week.

Greg Green, director of animal control in Caldwell County, said results from the state lab showed distemper, an incurable virus, apparently had spread through the facility. The shelter closed last Wednesday and has not been adopting or accepting dogs. Green said the illness has not affected cats.

Golden retriever teaches kids to read
Gil doesn't actually teach kids to read, because he can't talk. But that seems to be the trick in getting kids to read better. The 3 year old Golden Retriever is a trained therapy dog and part of the Tail-Waggin Tutor program.
