SC couple kept toddlers in dog pen, sheriff says
A Lexington County couple is charged with unlawful conduct toward a child after a driver found their 3-year-old son wandering alone on Pond Branch Road, according to deputies.

(By MEG KINNARD, Associated Press) South Carolina's state police have been asked to probe the shootings of several dogs found dead at a landfill in Chesterfield County, according to a letter obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press.

Activists had called for state police to look into the shootings after animal rescuers said they had found two dogs shot in the head and buried at a landfill. Whitney Knowlton of Last Chance Animal Rescue Fund said she urged authorities to investigate the circumstances and whether the dogs found Friday came from the county-run shelter.

The Chesterfield sheriff's office is conducting an internal investigation about allegations that county animal shelter workers may have shot almost two dozen dogs then dumped them in a landfill.
