(Observer Staff Reports) -- Sheriff Sam Parker has shut down the county animal shelter and put its five employees on paid leave, while an investigation continues into last week's apparent shooting of dogs that had been staying at the shelter.

Parker said Monday that up to 50 dogs had been shot, and he has asked the Solicitor General's office -- South Carolina's equivalent of the district attorney -- to determine if any laws had been broken.
